can't escape my ancestors

one of my grandma's favorite sayings is "you can't escape your ancestors!"
she loves to tell me this.  especially when we are plant shopping or gardening or talking about plants.

now, don't get me wrong, i love plants, particularly flowers.  i love eating fresh food from the garden.  but, shopping for hours and looking at plant after plant is just not my idea of a great day. most of them look the same to me.  particularly all the hostas.  my uncle is obsessed with hostas.

anyways, my mom found it funny when i called to tell her that i was going to garden one night.  our church is planting a community garden to provide fresh food to the local food
pantries.  its a pretty cool idea and since a bunch of my friends are running it, i went to help one night.  and my mom laughed.

so there i am.  weeding and smiling.  shocking i know.

but it really was fun.  and since some families can't go to the farmer's market or raid their mother's garden like i can, it is fun to help them get the fresh food that i enjoy.  yet one more thing that i enjoy about my church.

i'm not to the point where i have a strong desire to go plant shopping yet, but maybe my grandma will be right someday and i won't be able to avoid becoming like them.  ;)  i guess that wouldn't be so bad...
