letterboxing

i don't know if any of you have ever heard of this before, but last summer i tried it out with my brother and his fiancee.

according to wikipedia, letterboxing is "an outdoor hobby that combines elements of orienteering, art and puzzle solving. Letterboxers hide small, weatherproof boxes in publicly-accessible places (like parks) and distribute clues to finding the box in printed catalogs, on one of several web sites, or by word of mouth. Individual letterboxes usually contain a notebook and a rubber stamp. Finders make an imprint of the letterbox's stamp, either on their personal notebook or on a postcard, and leave an impression of their personal stamp on the letterbox's "visitors' book" or "logbook" — as proof of having found the box and letting subsequent letterboxers see who have visited. Many letterboxers keep careful track of their "find count"."

it is a really fun and simple activity that just allows you to spend time outside and explore different areas. last summer i just tagged along when my brother went, but this year, i wanted my own stamp and notebook to do it on my own. so andrea helped me figure out how to make my own stamp and i went and picked holly up and off we went on our first letterboxing adventure!

our first attempt was somewhat of a bust, we headed to picnic point and started deciphering the clues. but alas, when we found the final spot, the box was not there! sad. we are going to go back with aaron and andrea sometime to see if it is completely missing or we just missed it somehow.

after that, we headed to the terrace for our second attempt. this one was easy and i got my first stamp!

here's holly with the box we found!

here is my stamp (a daisy of course!) on the left, with the stamp (isn't that a cool terrace chair?!) we found on the right in my notebook!

i'm sure there will be many posts to come of my letterboxing adventures, but if you are interested in trying this for yourself, get a stamp or make a stamp, grab some ink, a notebook, head to letterboxing.org or atlas quest find some clues in your area, and have fun!
