it's a great story, great music, originally starred kristin chenoweth & idina menzel, and is just amazing.
i first saw wicked in chicago in october 2005. my friend marisa was living downtown and was able to get tickets for us. i had heard a little bit about the show. my friend stuart had played a little clip of the music for me and all i knew was that it was the back story of the wizard of oz. marisa and i had a fun weekend in chicago getting all dressed up for the show and playing around downtown. but the highlight was definitely the show. if anyone remembers ana gasteyer, she was on saturday night live (my favorite character being bobbie mohan-culp, the singing high school teacher with will ferrell) and was in mean girls playing lindsay lohan's mom, she played the lead character elphaba and blew me away with her voice. we bought the cd that night and for at least the next month that was pretty much all i listened too. my roommates at the time can probably vouch for that.
then about a year later, thanks to the generosity of my mother, i was able to go to chicago and see wicked a 2nd time. my mom's best friend Kay and some of her family & friends were planning a trip to chicago to shop and see a show. they picked wicked. my mom wanted to go, but already had plans to go to a badger football game on that saturday with my brother & my dad. so mom and i made a deal. i will admit that i probably got the better end of the deal. i would do the driving (mom hates driving in big cities) and she would pay for my ticket. there was no way i was turning that down! so on a friday afternoon, i drove my mom and i to chicago where i was able to see wicked again, stay at the hard rock hotel, and then drive back to madison bright and early saturday morning in time for mom to make it to the badger game.
then both my mom and dad took the time to inform me a while back that the appleton performing arts center would be getting wicked. so of course it meant i had to go again. when it comes to your hometown it seems natural to go. ;) so on saturday feb. 21, i was able to see wicked for, yes, a 3rd time! this time my roommate holly was able to go and see it for the first time. seeing as she has had the soundtrack memorized almost as long as i have and we have even learned the different parts and harmonies (what else do you do on a long roadtrip?!), it was fun for her to finally see the whole show. plus my grandma, my aunt, my cousin, and my dad also got to see it for the first time too.
so basically the point of this post is to explain my love of wicked. i love it. i do. thats just all there is to it. listen to the soundtrack. specifically:
the wizard and i
what is this feeling
popular
i'm not that girl
defying gravity
for good
see how i still list like half the soundtrack? ;)
